This page is for your information on how I am teaching your child. The children will be working with material designed for an Intensive Program. They will be working with an "Activity Book" I have created myself; and they will also work in the "Yes We Can" book, in which they will study basic English Grammar to improve their writing skills. We will also work on various oral projects to improve English Interactions and to add a little fun to the class. The classroom is equiped with a variety of English reading books, and we have a mandatory 30 minutes of reading every day; with the exception of Friday, which is Evaluation Day. We also go to the School Library once a week; but there the children have free choice to read in either French or English.
Every student has received a Larousse English-French dictionary which they can keep and use for the duration of the Intensive English semester. These dictionaries have been numbered and one number is asigned to each student at the begining of the school year. I am expecting the students to be careful with it and return it at the end of the semester (January or June) in the same state as they received it. I also have, in class, Webster’s Student dictionaries. These are excellent tools and my personal recommendation if you wish to buy an English dictionary for your child.
To add a little interest to listening exercises, we have one afternoon of "Show Time!” work every week. Using television, we watch a show together and the children must answer a quiz. I have chosen "The Cosby Show" for this purpose, as it is a light family orientated show with humour. We will eventually move on from T.V. shows to movies. On the last week of the month, there is a break from these exercises as the children will choose a movie they would like to see, so long as it is suitable for school viewing. Although there will be no quiz for this "Movie of the Month!", the movie still needs to be in English.
In order to give the children extra support outside the classroom, I have provided them with this web site, in which I have provided pages and links for the children to improve their English skills, but also for their fun and enjoyment. A message board has also been provided, the link to it is in the "Fun and Games" section of the site. This message board is password protected, to ensure that only my students have access to it. Please take note that because of the nature of the Internet, and the World Wide Web in particular, it is still possible to access a series of links that may take one to almost anywhere. In other words, in spite of my efforts to supply appropriate material and links on this site, I do suggest you supervise your children while they surf the Web.
